Rapid 3D Intraoral Scanning

A 3D dental scanner that revolutionizes scanning by removing the need for line of sight. The tooth shape is determined by a soft gel pad that conforms to the tooth when in contact. A single dual color light source & camera in conjunction with a special coating is able to determine the topological data of the tooth being measured. This technology reduces the size, weight and power requirements of the handheld device enabling lower costs and faster scanning processes.

We initially approached the problem by understanding the task flow of existing intraoral 3D scanners. We found that there was too much back and forth interaction between the computer terminal interface and the patient. Thus, we decided to streamline the entire workflow by adding control buttons for “scan” & “confirm” onto the handheld device itself. This enables the operator to navigate and scan the entire jaw without having to interact directly with the computer/interface.

We explored various embodiments of the gel pad technology from bite guards to tooth brushes. After exploring these through mockups and sketches with our dentist stakeholders we determined that a minimal and flexible format would work the best due to space constraints and patients with sensitive areas and teeth.
