Virtual Teller Machine

Remote Branch Extensions

SPD Bank engaged Wincor Nixdorf a well known ATM machine manufacturer to design a Virtual Teller Machine which would be able to replace most of the essential tasks that a bank branch would be able to fulfill. This includes account opening, identify and document verification, one-to-one consultation, cash withdrawal/deposit services to name a few. These teller machines would slowly phase out in-person branches and lower operational costs in remote locations where customer volumes are low.

The selected concept merges the ergonomic needs of standing as well as wheelchair bound users by ensuring that all touchpoints are within reach. To the right of the teller screen are input touchpoints such as document scanners, cheque deposit, barcode scanners, signature pads, PIN modules and contactless card readers. The cash deposit and withdrawal location is retained in the center for familiarity. The focal area is the main HD two way video conferencing screen for a one-to-one consultation with a real person.

The inset front panel provides a single molded component to minimize tooling as well as providing customers privacy to keep and sign documents during operation. The large panels along the base prominently display the banks branding as well as secondary red accent color.

We developed our final concept by starting with layouts of the required components. This allowed us to explore configurations whilst validating their ergonomic dimensions. In parallel, we explored a variety of kiosk styles approaching the design from inside as well as out.

The next stage involved overlaying sketches and rendering them on selected configurations. This ensured that proportions and spacing was maintained before moving into 3D modelling. Additionally, we could quickly explore colors, graphics and parting lines. Finally, in 3D we created the outer surfaces for rendering. We finally built 1:10 scale models out of foam to validate surfaces and proportions in 3D.
